Mike undertook the three-year trade course in woodturning at Sydney Technical College between 1976 and 1978. In 1979 he started his woodturning business Mike Darlow Woodturning which grew to employ five turners and a cabinetmaker. In 1994 Mike moved to Exeter in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, and concentrated on writing woodturning books and filming videos. He still though continued to produce.
